Requests / Bugs

Post by 062013 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 2:07 pm

Maybe it's an idea to get most bug/feature requests in one thread to not clutter the index page of general discussions

I found that most links open in the same browser tab this is annoying for me and am curious as others think so as well

Personally have no issue with this as I tend to open links with the middle mouse button which always opens it in another tab anyway.

I agree that external links should open in a new tab. The current setting is counter-intuitive.

How so? Pretty much every link on the web opens in the current tab. It would be more counter-intuitive to have a sudden inconsistency there just because it's an "external link," to be honest. It feels like an exception that really doesn't need to be there. Especially because you can just hold CTRL to let your browser open it up in another tab if you want it to do so, and have to do so on most websites anyway.

(I personally never want my browser to open a new tab, unless I tell it to do so. My use of browser tabs is out of control enough as it is :P )

Disclaimer: I'm not a web designer. But I'll explain my thoughts:

Facebook and Twitter open external links in new tabs. Search engines like Google do not do this, because the user often does not need to go back after visiting the external link.

However, for external links in social media and forums, it makes sense in a way to have the external links open in a new tab, because it's very likely that the user will want to return to the original page later on. It might be a convenience to have the original tab still open in the background.

Internal links should almost always open in the same tab, because then you're still browsing the same environment.
